A town of mountain stories.
Big Stone Gap sits along the Powell River in Wise County, tucked into the gap where Stone Mountain, Little Stone Mountain, and Wallens Ridge meet. The town has long been a cultural anchor for far Southwest Virginia, known for the Trail of the Lonesome Pine outdoor drama, which has been performed every summer for more than fifty years, and for a walkable downtown of brick storefronts and historic homes. The Southwest Virginia Museum State Historical Park and the John Fox Jr. Museum tell the area’s stories of coal, timber, and the writers who put the region on the literary map. John Fox Jr.’s 1908 novel The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, which inspired the drama, was a major national bestseller in its day, and his earlier novel The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come is often cited as the first American book to sell more than a million copies.
From Big Stone Gap, the drive to our Lebanon offices runs about an hour by way of Route 58 and Route 19 through Wise and Russell counties. Many of our Big Stone Gap clients come for outpatient counseling, EMDR therapy for adults, teens, and children ages 7 and older, and psychiatric medication management with our nurse practitioner at the East Main Office. For adults whose depression has not responded to first-line medications, we also offer GeneSight® pharmacogenomic testing and Spravato® (esketamine), both available on-site in Lebanon.
We know an hour of mountain driving each way is a real commitment, especially in winter when Powell Mountain weather can change quickly. Once a Big Stone Gap client is established with one of our clinicians, secure telehealth visits are available anywhere in Virginia, which makes it easier to keep care consistent through busy seasons and rough weather.
