Grundy is the seat of Buchanan County, set in the rugged Appalachian coalfields where Levisa Fork meets Slate Creek. The town is home to the Appalachian School of Law and the Appalachian College of Pharmacy, both of which bring students and faculty into a place that, just a generation ago, was best known for coal and timber. After repeated devastating floods, much of the town’s commercial district was rebuilt on a man-made shelf above the river, one of the most ambitious flood-relief engineering projects ever undertaken in the United States. The result is a downtown that looks unlike anywhere else in Virginia, perched above the water with the mountains pressing in on every side.

From Grundy, both of our Lebanon offices are generally about an hour to an hour-and-ten-minute drive southwest, taking US-460 down through Vansant and Richlands and on into Russell County. The Pioneer Drive Office, on the north side of Lebanon, is home to our counseling team and offers EMDR therapy for trauma, anxiety, and difficult memories in adults, teens, and children ages 7 and older. The East Main Office houses psychiatric medication management with April Colley, FNP-BC, PMHNP, GeneSight® pharmacogenetic testing, and Spravato® treatment for adults with treatment-resistant depression. We see clients from across Buchanan County, including Vansant, Oakwood, Hurley, and Big Rock.

An hour-plus each way through mountain roads is a real commitment. For Grundy clients, we often suggest beginning care in person and then moving to telehealth for ongoing sessions once you’ve established with a provider. Secure video sessions let established clients meet from home or any private space in Virginia, which keeps weekly therapy and monthly medication follow-ups sustainable through the seasons.
