The seat of Dickenson County.
Clintwood is the seat of Dickenson County, set high in the rugged Cumberland Plateau where the Cranesnest, McClure, and Pound rivers gather toward the John W. Flannagan Reservoir. It’s coal country in the deepest sense, with steep hollows, narrow ridges, and small mountain communities knit together by winding two-lane roads. The Ralph Stanley Museum, housed in a restored Victorian home in downtown Clintwood, honors the area’s bluegrass heritage. Stanley himself, whose haunting ‘O Death’ was featured in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, was born in nearby Stratton. A short drive north, Breaks Interstate Park offers one of the deepest river gorges east of the Mississippi.
From Clintwood, the drive to our Lebanon offices runs roughly an hour to an hour and ten minutes, most often by way of Route 80 south through Haysi and Honaker. Clintwood and Dickenson County clients come to us for outpatient counseling, EMDR therapy for adults, teens, and children ages 7 and older, marriage and family work, and psychiatric medication management with our nurse practitioner. For adults whose depression has not improved with first-line medications, we also offer GeneSight® pharmacogenomic testing and Spravato® (esketamine) at the East Main Office.
We know that mountain driving from Dickenson County can be unpredictable, especially in winter when ice on Route 80 can turn a normal commute into a real ordeal. Once a Clintwood client is established with one of our clinicians, secure telehealth visits are available anywhere in Virginia, so therapy and medication management can keep pace with life without requiring a long drive every single week.
